A late 19th-century still life study executed in oil on canvas, depicting a rustic composition of fruit and earthenware. The work features a central woven wicker basket filled with several red and yellow apples, accompanied by a terracotta-toned earthenware pitcher and a single apple with a leaf resting on a dark, stone-like surface. The painting is rendered in a realist, academic style with soft, blended brushwork and a focused light source from the upper left. The composition is presented in a circular tondo format within a square gilt-wood frame. The lower right corner of the painting bears a red painted monogram that appears to be the intertwined letters ‘CS’ followed by the date ‘1880’. The reverse of the canvas is inscribed in hand with ‘Red Rossels 1880’, ‘C. Clayson ?’, ‘4 Mount Hooton’, and ‘Forest Road’. The canvas also bears a rectangular stencil stamp for the artist’s supplier reading ‘PREPARED BY WINSOR & NEWTON, 38, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON.’ The work is housed in a deep-profile gilt wood and gesso frame.
