A Victorian gilt metal effect? or low carat gold? bar brooch, likely serving as a nanny pin or needle case. The central body features a rectangular tablet of goldstone (aventurine glass) with rounded corners and characteristic copper-coloured metallic inclusions, held by six prongs. This central section is flanked by scrolled wirework and two star-shaped accents. The brooch is constructed with a hollow bar that appears to function as a needle case, secured with a screw-top terminal. The reverse of the bar is incised with the name Josephine. The star-shaped accents bear small relief marks reading 15ct, suggesting a gold purity of 15 carats. The item is presented in a blue velvet-covered case with a cream silk lining; the interior lid is printed in gold lettering with the mark Alex. Laing Watchmaker & Jeweller Larkhall. under a crown device. The brooch features a traditional C-clasp mechanism with a long pin.
