A late Victorian sterling silver-mounted pocket watch travel or display case of square form with rounded corners. The silver mount is decorated with high-relief repoussé work featuring bird motifs amongst scrolling foliage and flowers. The central circular aperture is glazed with clear glass, designed to allow visibility of a pocket watch dial while the case remains closed. The silver mount is secured to a hard-shell case with a red-toned textured exterior, fitted with a brass push-button catch and a hinged lid. The interior is lined with a deep-red velvet, featuring a circular recessed well to accommodate a standard-sized pocket watch. The silver mount bears a vertical row of four hallmarks on the right-hand edge: the maker’s mark ‘W.N’ in a rectangular punch, the lion passant for sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the lowercase ‘y’ date letter for 1898.
