A hand-carved hardwood measuring wheel, of a type traditionally employed as a cooper’s or wheelwright’s traveller for determining the circumference of barrels or wheels. The tool is robustly constructed, featuring a substantial handle with a central longitudinal slot that houses a solid circular wooden disk. This disk rotates freely on a simple iron? pivot pin. The handle tapers towards a rounded grip, which is pierced at the terminal and fitted with a simple knotted leather cord lanyard. The hardwood exhibits a rich, dark patina and shows evidence of hand-hewn construction through visible tool marks and subtle surface irregularities consistent with long-term trade use. This piece represents a functional example of folk art or trade equipment from a rural British? or European? tradition. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible on the object.
Overall length: 37.5 cm
Disk diameter: 17.1 cm.
