A British aviation trailing aerial weight cable assembly of World War II? vintage, likely for use with Royal Air Force? or Fleet Air Arm? aircraft. The assembly consists of a braided steel cable carrying a group of spherical dark grey lead? alloy beads. Each bead exhibits a matte, heavily oxidised surface finish with visible pitting and small dents throughout. One end of the cable is finished with a crimped metal collar, while the opposite end is frayed and missing its original attachment hook. The assembly retains a fragile, oil-stained brown paper instructional tag. The tag is printed in dark ink with a heading NOTICE and reads in part: ‘BEFORE PLACING IN SERVICE, LUBRICATE LIGHT WEIGHT CABLE WEEKLY WITH GREASE IN ACCORDANCE WITH BRITISH SPECIFICATION D.T.D.’, ‘OIL OF NEW JERSEY NO.’, and ‘OR ROLLS-ROYCE CASE GREASE MAY BE’. The mention of Rolls-Royce suggests association with aircraft powered by Merlin or Griffon engines, such as the Spitfire or Lancaster.
