A late 19th century? Russian Orthodox icon of the Kazan Mother of God (Kazanskaya Theotokos), of rectangular form. The icon is constructed from a painted wooden panel largely covered by a repoussé and chased metal oklad with a gilt metal effect finish. The oklad features a textured ground and a prominent border of scrolling foliate and floral motifs, with the Virgin’s mantle decorated with repetitive quatrefoil and rosette medallions. The painted faces and hands of the Virgin and the Christ Child are visible through shaped apertures in the metal cover, rendered in a traditional ecclesiastical style. The haloes bear the Cyrillic inscriptions МР ӨУ (Mother of God) and IC XC (Jesus Christ). A single rectangular punch mark is present on the oklad below the Virgin’s chin, however the characters within the mark are not legible.
