A Russian? lacquer and papier-mâché? box of rectangular form with rounded corners. The lid is decorated with a hand-painted oil miniature of a young woman in folk dress, wearing a yellow and green outfit with red ribbons and carrying a floral garland. The painting is set against a black ground in a style indicative of late 19th-century Fedoskino? or Lukutin? manufacture. The exterior surfaces are finished in a polished black lacquer.
