A hand-knotted wool rug, characteristic of the Shiraz tribal designs from the Fars province of southern Iran. The rug features a vibrant madder red central field containing a large, elongated hexagonal medallion with a cream ground, decorated with internal geometric motifs in blue, salmon, and brown. The surrounding field is populated with scattered small geometric ornaments. The four spandrels feature dense geometric patterns on cream and blue grounds. The composition is framed by a primary border of repeating latch-hook and stepped-diamond motifs, flanked by several narrow guard borders in contrasting colours. The rug is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and finished with white cotton fringes at both ends.
