A late 19th or early 20th-century continental ceramic character tobacco jar or humidor. The piece is constructed from cold-painted terracotta and is modelled as a gentleman’s head with a prominent nose and smirking expression. The figure wears a tall grey top hat and a dark brown collared coat. The item is designed with the upper portion of the head and hat serving as the lid, while the lower face and shoulders form the hollow base container. The underside of the base is impressed with the model number 349 and a small, rectangular maker’s mark which is not clearly legible. The overall form, material, and numbering style are characteristic of Austro-Hungarian manufacture from the period.
