She supports the infant Jesus, who is similarly abstracted. The piece demonstrates a modernist interpretation of traditional Gothic religious iconography. The surface bears the remnants of a dark brown finish or polychromy, which exhibits significant flaking and losses, exposing the underlying wood grain. A prominent horizontal join is visible at the neck.
