This hand-carved wooden bear sculpture with a salmon is a classic example of Hokkaido Kibori-kuma folk art. Carved from a single block of wood, the piece features characteristic rhythmic gouge marks to simulate the texture of thick fur. The bear is depicted in a standing posture, gripping a salmon in its jaws. The sculpture is finished with a dark brown stain, leaving some of the natural wood grain visible. This style of carving is a traditional craft associated with the Ainu people of Japan. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the exterior surfaces.
