A 19th-century Imperial Russian rectangular snuff or trinket box constructed from papier-mâché. The hinged lid features a hand-painted scene of a young woman dressed in traditional Russian peasant attire, including a yellow gown with red-accented sleeves and a dark headscarf secured with a green ribbon. The composition is set against a black lacquer background, which extends to the sides and base of the box. The interior is finished in a plain dark lacquer. No Cyrillic signatures, maker marks, or factory stamps are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces. The style of the figurative painting is characteristic of the 19th-century workshops in the Moscow province, such as the Vishnyakov factory or early Fedoskino production.
