A trio of antique cast iron charcoal box irons, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. These domestic appliances were designed to be filled with hot embers or charcoal to heat the soleplate for pressing laundry. Each iron features a hollow cast iron body with varying ventilation and latching mechanisms. One iron features a circular turned wooden handle on a cast iron mount, a ball-latch mechanism to the lid, and decorative scalloped edging with circular ventilation holes along the base. The second iron, positioned to the rear, has a horizontal turned wooden handle set upon an ornate cast iron bracket and features a hinged rear tail-gate door for fuel insertion, with scalloped detailing to both the lid and the base. The third iron features a circular turned wooden handle and a front lever-latch mechanism, with decorative scalloped edges on the lid and wide ventilation apertures on the sides. White adhesive stickers with the printed digits 4933 are present on two of the irons. No maker’s marks or stamps are clearly legible on the cast iron bodies or wooden handles.
