This is a set of antique British postal balance scales dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period. The instrument comprises a shaped and polished mahogany base with three inset brass-lined wells for holding weights. The balance mechanism is constructed from brass, featuring a rectangular platform for letters and a circular pan for weights. The letter platform is engraved with a postal rate table: POSTAL RATES FOR LETTERS Not Exceeding 4oz 1d, with further entries below of 6 1 1/2 and 8 2. These rates correspond to United Kingdom inland postage charges established between 1897 and 1915. The horizontal brass beam is engraved with the words WARRANTED ACCURATE. The set includes three weights, with two visible outside the base marked 1/2 OZ and 2 OZ, and a third weight seated within one of the circular wells.
