Another Great Auction
This collection comprises an assortment of framed prints, featuring seven portraits of celebrated classical composers and two larger colour genre scenes. The portraits include depictions of Frederic Chopin (after the painting by Eugene Delacroix), Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Ludwig van Beethoven, and George Frideric Handel (after the painting by Balthasar Denner). The portraits appear to be reproductive prints, such as photogravures or high-quality lithographs, frequently found in late 19th or early 20th-century music publications. The two colour genre scenes are likely chromolithographic plates depicting figures in historical dress in urban street settings. The prints are presented in various frames: the genre scenes are housed in black stepped frames with dark green mounts, while the composer portraits are set in four silver-finished frames and three reddish-brown wood-effect frames. Printed inscriptions on the portraits include PORTRAIT OF CHOPIN BY DELACROIX, 1838 and From the painting by Balthasar Denner in possession of the author.
