Buyer's Premium:

A lot comprising two Japanese carved figurines, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, covering the Late Meiji and Taisho periods. Both items are hand-carved from an organic material, such as bone or ivory, and exhibit a naturally aged yellowish-cream patina.

The first figure represents a seated male, possibly a Luohan or monk, in the style of an okimono. The figure wears traditional flowing robes decorated with significant red, blue, and black polychrome pigments. The head features a stippled texture to represent shaved hair and a serene, smiling facial expression. The piece is set upon an integral oval base with linear carved detailing.

The second figure is a family group depicting three figures: a man, a woman, and a child. The woman is portrayed lifting the child aloft while the man stands adjacent. The figures feature fine incised detailing, with traditional hairstyles stained in black and robes accented with green and black line work.

Both pieces are executed with hand-carved incised details and selective staining. No visible signatures, characters, or maker’s marks are present on either piece.
