Another Great Auction
A pair of antique wrought iron or steel screw-lock handcuffs, of a pattern commonly produced by Hiatt and Co. for British police and penal use. The set comprises two D-shaped cuffs, each featuring a screw-in locking bar. These are joined by a short three-link chain featuring a central swivel. Included is a matching T-shaped barrel key with a circular thumb piece, which is currently attached to the chain by a length of brown cord. The head of the key is stamped with the characters H and I. Similar, though less distinct, stamped marks are visible on the side of the locking bars. The construction and locking mechanism are characteristic of mid-to-late 19th-century hardware design.
