An Edwardian sterling silver matchbox holder or sleeve. The item is of rectangular form featuring a flared, stepped base. One side of the sleeve contains a large rectangular aperture designed to expose the striking surface of a matchbox held within. The piece is struck with a clear set of British hallmarks on the side. The marks include the makers mark JR for John Rose, the lion passant indicating .925 sterling silver, the anchor town mark for the Birmingham Assay Office, and the lowercase date letter g for the year 1906. The interior currently holds a matchbox with a visible yellow striking surface.
