A commemorative or decorative miner’s safety lamp, modelled after the functional Type 59 safety lamps used in British coal mines. This example is produced by The Protector Lamp and Lighting Co Ltd of Eccles, Manchester. The body and base are constructed from turned wood with a polished mahogany-toned finish, accented with brass fittings. It features a circular brass maker’s plate fixed to the wooden cylinder, inscribed with the text: THE PROTECTOR LAMP and LIGHTING Co LTD – MAKERS – ECCLES, TYPE 59, MINISTRY OF POWER, SAFETY LAMPS, APPROVAL No. B2/196. The construction includes four brass support pillars surrounding a clear glass cylinder and a central wick and burner assembly. The top is finished with a brass cap and a folding circular carrying handle.
