This item is a traditional hunting trophy brooch, often referred to as a Gamsbart, typically used as a hat ornament or a Highland dress accessory. The piece features a dense bundle of natural dark animal hair, likely badger or coarse horsehair, secured within a decorative metal sleeve. The tapered sleeve is fashioned from white metal and features a cast and applied band of foliate decoration depicting oak leaves and acorns. A small knurled screw is located on the side of the sleeve, intended to tighten and hold the hair bundle in place. The open end of the mount is finished with a flared, rope-twist textured rim. To the reverse is a simple hinged pin mechanism with a C-clasp. No hallmarks, fineness marks, or maker’s marks are visible. The metal exhibits a heavy, dark patina and surface tarnish.
Length: 135mm.
