A 19th-century British fireplace footman or hanging trivet, designed for use with a kitchen range or fireplace grate. The object features a cast iron rectangular top plate and frame with a decorative pierced brass apron to the front. The top plate is ornamented with pierced geometric patterns, including hearts and diamonds, which surround a central star-like floral motif. The decorative brass apron is secured to the frame with three rivets and features a central circular medallion depicting a stylised quadruped, possibly a horse or lion, flanked by foliate scrollwork. The footman is supported by two front cast cabriole legs terminating in pad feet and a single straight iron rod leg at the rear. Two large, curved iron hooks extend from the back, allowing the piece to be suspended from horizontal grate bars. Two paper auction lot labels bearing the number 1704 are present on the top and background.
