A rectangular Japanese black lacquer lidded box, designed for the storage of stationery, pens, or brushes. The exterior surface is finished in polished black lacquer, featuring a maki-e landscape scene. The decoration depicts a stylised mountain peak, likely Mount Fuji, rising behind a thatched pavilion and pine trees. Different tones and textures of gold lacquer are employed to create depth within the composition. The interior is finished in uniform plain black lacquer. The box is constructed on a wooden core with base metal hinges and a hook clasp. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
