A 20th-century Chinese export jewellery chest of rectangular form, constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly rosewood. The design features a hinged top lid and a pair of front doors that open to reveal an interior with three tiered pull-out drawers. The exterior is extensively decorated with engraved brass hardware, including decorative corner plates, hinges, and straps with floral and foliate motifs. The front doors are secured by a large ruyi-head shaped brass latch plate. Both side panels are inset with circular brass medallions depicting a ‘Shou’ longevity character, with swing carrying handles mounted on pierced ‘double-coin’ backplates. The interior is fully lined with a red silk-style damask fabric featuring a woven pattern of bamboo and flowers. A modern white inventory label bearing the number 1001 is adhered to one side.
