An antique Victorian era housing for a portable oil or paraffin heater, produced under patent by Rippingilles. The rectangular body is constructed from cast iron with elaborate pierced and embossed decoration featuring foliate and scrollwork motifs. The unit is capped with a decorative domed top and a turned finial. A large central aperture on the front reveals a corrugated sheet metal internal reflector. The lower front panel includes the cast relief inscription RIPPINGILLES PATENT. This lot comprises the decorative outer casing; the internal burner and oil reservoir are absent.
