An antique black silk plush top hat manufactured by Tress and Co. of London. The hat features a high cylindrical crown with a flat top, constructed from black silk plush fabric. The narrow brim is curled and finished with a black grosgrain ribbon binding. A wide grosgrain ribbon hatband is positioned at the base of the crown. The interior is lined with white silk and includes a leather sweatband. The interior crown is gold-stamped with the manufacturer mark for Tress and Co. London, which includes a heraldic crest listing exhibition awards from Paris 1855 and 1867, London 1862, and Philadelphia 1876. It is further marked as being made expressly for A. Caird and Sons Ltd., outfitters of Dundee and Perth. The fit is stamped as a Long Oval. Three gold-toned foil initials J S M are present on the interior lining.
