This five-tier Japanese lacquer food box, known as a jubako, is accompanied by a matching lid and features a rectangular form with slightly rounded corners. The exterior surfaces are finished in polished black lacquer and decorated with gold maki-e (sprinkled gold powder) depicting the traditional Sho-chiku-bai motif, commonly referred to as the Three Friends of Winter. This auspicious design incorporates gnarled pine branches (matsu), flowering plum blossoms (ume), and bamboo stalks (take). The interior of each tier is finished in a contrasting vibrant cinnabar-red lacquer. The box is constructed from wood, and there are no visible maker’s marks or signatures on the surfaces.
