This large Russian lacquer box is a product of the renowned Fedoskino school, dated 2001 and signed by the artist N. Shakhova. Constructed from traditional papier-mâché, the box features a waisted, scalloped form with a high-gloss black lacquer exterior and a vibrant red lacquer interior. The lid is decorated with a finely detailed miniature oil painting depicting a scene titled Gadanie (Fortune-telling), showing a group of young women in traditional Russian dress and kokoshnik headdresses consulting a fortune teller within a lush woodland setting. The edges of the lid and the sides of the box are finished with a delicate gold scroll and filigree border. The work is signed in gold Cyrillic script at the bottom edge of the lid; to the left it reads Федоскино 2001 (Fedoskino 2001), and to the right Н. Шахова (N. Shakhova) alongside the title «Гадание» (Gadanie).
