A substantial ceramic lidded urn of twin-handled baluster form, complete with its original square-section pedestal base. The body of the vase features a large central hand-painted cartouche depicting a classical pastoral scene with three figures, a male flautist and two female companions, within a wooded landscape. The surrounding cream-coloured glaze is decorated with elaborate gilded floral sprays and raised enamel jewelled work in deep burgundy and cobalt blue tones. The domed lid is topped with an acorn-style finial, and the square pedestal features a recessed circular well with matching gilded and enamelled decoration. The underside of the urn bears a printed gold mark within a shaped border reading ROYAL VIENNA PATENT 22983.
