An antique vesta case, or match safe, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The case is constructed from gunmetal, a form of oxidised steel, and features a side-hinged lid with a push-button release mechanism. The front face is decorated with an applied horseshoe motif set with small turquoise-coloured cabochons. The base of the case is fitted with a textured, serrated striker panel for use with friction matches. A fixed suspension loop with two jump rings is attached to the side for securing the item to a watch chain or chatelaine. The interior is lined with a brass-toned metal. No maker marks, hallmarks, or signatures are present on the item.
