A set of four circular painted enamel plaques, likely of French or English origin, dating from the late 18th or 19th century. Each plaque features a miniature painting of a female nude in a classical pose set against a naturalistic landscape background. The figures are rendered in a Neoclassical or Rococo revival style. The medium is painted enamel on metal, likely copper. The reverse of each plaque features a salmon-pink counter-enamel, a technique used to prevent the metal substrate from warping during the kiln-firing process. These plaques were traditionally intended for insertion into decorative objects such as snuff boxes or vanity cases.
Diameter: 38mm.
