A professional railway track super-elevation gauge manufactured by I. and D. Smallwood Ltd of Birmingham. The instrument is constructed with a tapered mahogany body and a central recessed brass plate. This plate houses two spirit levels containing a green fluorescent liquid, positioned below a graduated scale numbered 0 to 6 with fine subdivisions. The brass plate is stamped within an oval mark I. and D. SMALLWOOD LTD MAKERS BIRMINGHAM and is further engraved B.R./W 1961 and PROV. PAT. indicating use by the Western Region of British Railways. One end of the gauge features a fixed steel step-gauge stamped B.R. over JS129/64, while the opposite end is finished with a brass-capped tip.
