A set of three hand-carved wooden figures representing the Three Wise Monkeys, depicting the proverbial principle see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Each monkey is shown in a different pose: Mizaru covering his eyes, Kikazaru covering his ears, and Iwazaru covering his mouth. The figures are carved from a dense wood and finished with a dark stain that has rubbed away in areas to reveal a lighter reddish-brown wood beneath. The carving is executed in a stylised folk-art manner with grooved details to represent fur. There are no visible maker’s marks or signatures on the figures.
Height: 17.5 cm.
