Sold for: £820
A Cartier Art Deco matchbox sleeve of rectangular form, constructed from sterling silver-gilt with polychrome enamel decoration. The exterior features panels of polished black enamel bordered by a broad band of red enamel and fine silver-gilt stringing, with a distinctive stepped cloud-like profile at the opening end. The interior is fully gilded. The piece is housed in its original green floral-patterned paper case with a silk-lined interior. The interior of the sleeve bears four struck marks: a sponsor’s mark JC within a rectangular cartouche, likely for Jacques Cartier?, a 925 fineness mark in an oval, a London import mark, and a date letter g in a square shield for 1922?. The interior silk lining of the case features a gold-printed maker’s mark reading CARTIER LONDON 175 NEW BOND ST PARIS 13 RUE DE LA PAIX NEW YORK 653 5TH AVENUE. A matching adhesive paper label is located on the underside of the case, though partially lost. A vintage matchbox from The Waldorf Hotel, Aldwych W.C.2 is included.
