A George V sterling silver cigarette case by the renowned makers Sampson Mordan and Co Ltd. The exterior features a sleek, plain polished finish with rounded corners. The interior is finished with a gold wash (silver-gilt) and is fitted with two highly decorative hinged retainers. These retainers feature intricate pierced and engraved openwork decoration, comprising foliate scrolls, acanthus leaves, and a central mask motif. The case bears a full set of British hallmarks on the interior surfaces. These include the maker mark S.M over LTD for Sampson Mordan and Co Ltd, the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, and the date letter D for 1928. An additional set of stamps includes a profile head in an oval punch and a smaller S.M maker mark.
