A Victorian silver-plated and cut glass claret jug of tall, cylindrical form. The body is constructed from clear crystal featuring a deep and precise allover diamond-cut or hobnail pattern. The jug is fitted with elaborate silver-plated mounts. The spout is cast in the form of a Bacchus mask with vine leaf hair and grape clusters. The hinged circular lid is surmounted by a cast finial depicting a rampant lion holding a shield. The handle is of an elongated naturalistic form, designed to resemble a gnarled branch with leaf and bud details. The collar is extensively chased and embossed with scrolling foliate designs and diaper-patterned backgrounds. A small adhesive lot label with the handwritten number 7645 is attached to the underside of the spout. No maker’s marks or hallmarks are visible on the metalwork or glass.
