This lot comprises three framed decorative items. The first is a hand-coloured engraved strip map after John Ogilby (British, 1600–1676), titled The Continuation of the Road from LONDON to the LANDS – END. This plate, identified as Plate 4th and last, depicts the route from Plymouth in Devon to Sennen in Cornwall. The map features a decorative title cartouche with figures and a coat of arms, a compass rose, and topographic details of the route through locations including Looe, Fowey, Tregony, Marazion, and Penzance. The printed text states: The Continuation of the Road from LONDON to the LANDS – END. Plate 4th and last Commencing at Plymouth com Devon & Extending to Senan com Cornub. Containing 84 Miles 5 Furlongs viz From Plymouth to Lowe 10’2 m to Foye 8’4 q to Trewandrerth 7’7 to Tregony 14’6 v to Market Jew 24’2 m to Penzance 3’1 to S. Buran 6’1 m & to Senan 4’3.
The map is accompanied by a pair of transport-themed needlework panels. The first panel depicts a four-horse-drawn stagecoach travelling through a snowy landscape with bare trees. The second panel shows an early 19th-century style steam locomotive pulling two passenger carriages through a similar winter landscape with mountains in the background. Both are executed in fine needlepoint, possibly silk or wool, on a cream ground.
All three items are housed in matching black wooden frames with gilded inner beaded borders and are glazed. The needlework panels are further enhanced with double mounts in dark green and gold tones.
Largest item (frame): 12 inches x 10 inches.
