This 20th-century Chinese export jewellery box is constructed from a dark, dense wood with a fine grain, characteristic of rosewood or hongmu. The rectangular box features a hinged lid with a central inset oval medallion of pale celadon-coloured stone, likely jade or soapstone, featuring pierced and carved decoration depicting a bird amongst foliage. The stone inlay is secured by two decorative brass mounts in the form of stylised clouds. The exterior is further embellished with engraved brass hardware, including decorative corner mounts and a large rectangular front latch plate with floral engravings. The interior is fully lined with a red silk brocade fabric featuring a repetitive floral and phoenix pattern. It is fitted with a padded ring roll and a larger compartment for other items. A traditional Chinese-style brass padlock is included. The item is accompanied by its original protective cardboard box, bearing a repeating printed pattern in cursive script reading Shanghai Gift.
