A late 19th or early 20th-century oak spinning chair of characteristic form, also referred to as a hall chair or lady’s chair. The chair features a tall, narrow, tapering backrest decorated with deep hand-carved relief work. The carving depicts scrolling acanthus leaves surrounding two central floral motifs, set against a textured, punched ground. The backrest is surmounted by a pierced scrollwork crest with a central circular aperture. The solid, shaped seat is contoured with an incised border and a central circular sunburst motif. The chair is supported by three splayed, ring-turned legs which are socketed into the underside of the seat. Constructed from solid oak with a dark-stained finish. The backrest is tenoned into the seat.
