This large-format Victorian Family Bible is identified as Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible by the Reverend John Brown. The volume is bound in heavily embossed black leather over thick boards, featuring decorative brass-toned metal edges and corners. The front cover is inset with four recessed circular metal medallions depicting King David, Moses, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ. The central gilt-stamped design features a crown within a star, surrounded by ribbons bearing the text Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path Psalm CXIX 105. The interior includes a chromolithographic title page with vibrant architectural borders and Gothic-style script reading The Holy Bible CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS. A handwritten ink presentation inscription on a preliminary leaf reads: Presented to George Newman. by the Members of the Mount Tabor Wesleyan Reform Chapel Mitchell’s Terrace. July 31st 1897. The volume features all edges gilt and is folio in size.
