A collection of large glazed earthenware character jugs produced in England, depicting various historical and literary figures. The collection includes a hand-painted William Shakespeare jug by Sylvac, Staffordshire, featuring a high forehead, trimmed beard, and a green and white ruff collar. Also included is a Henry VIII jug by Kingston Pottery (a J. & H. Love production), depicting the Tudor monarch with a dark beard and green cap. The remaining items in the collection consist of a female character jug in the style of Queen Elizabeth I with orange-red hair and a blue headdress, a bearded male figure in Tudor-style dress with a brown cap, and an older gentleman wearing wire-rimmed spectacles and a green brimmed hat with a handle formed as a furled umbrella. The Shakespeare jug base is marked with black printed text: SYLVAC, STAFFORDSHIRE, HAND PAINTED, MADE IN ENGLAND, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. The Henry VIII jug base features a circular black printed mark for KINGSTON POTTERY PRODUCTION, J. & H. LOVE with a central three-lion shield crest, alongside incised marks for ENGLAND and HENRY. These pieces feature hand-painted decoration over moulded details.
