A pair of standing 12 inch baluster-form earthenware vases decorated in the Satsuma style. Each vase features a prominent yellow-ground central band depicting hand-painted figures, including scholars and characters in detailed robes rendered in iron-red, brown, black, and gold enamels. The shoulders and bases are embellished with dense brocade-patterned borders featuring geometric and stylised floral motifs. The vases are finished with a characteristic cream-coloured crackle glaze and have slightly flared necks and footrims. This style of decoration is typical of Japanese earthenware produced for the export market. No maker marks are visible on the bases.
Height: 12 inches.
