A two-piece silver-plated butter dish manufactured by Elkington and Co for the White Star Line shipping company. The set comprises a shallow circular bowl and a matching removable perforated liner. The liner features a decorative arrangement of pierced star and eight-petal floral motifs. The bowl is designed with a flared, stepped rim and a reeded border. The base of the bowl is stamped with the Elkington and Co crest, the manufacturer name ELKINGTON PLATE, and the shipping line name WHITE STAR LINE. Additional stamps include the numbers 59 and 27416, the letter A, and a date letter j within a shield, indicating a manufacture date of circa 1895. The perforated liner is similarly marked with ELKINGTON PLATE and WHITE STAR LINE, and includes an engraved cross pattée symbol.
