A silver-plated lidded jug of tankard form, manufactured by the British silversmiths Mappin and Webb Ltd. This piece was produced as service ware for the Port Line shipping company, featuring an engraved emblem on the body depicting the company house flag with a saltire and cross design above a ribbon banner inscribed PORT LINE. The jug is constructed with a cylindrical body, a simple scroll handle, and a hinged flat lid with a thumbpiece. The design exhibits a functional Art Deco influence, characteristic of mid-20th-century nautical hospitality ware. The base is stamped with the maker mark MAPPIN & WEBB LTD, a shield-shaped mark containing the letter H, the alphanumeric serial number W29538, a capacity mark of 1/2 PINT within a rectangular border, and the individual characters 8 and R. The W prefix is indicative of the Mappin and Webb Princes Plate line.
