A pair of silver-plated salt and pepper casters manufactured by Mappin & Webb for maritime use. These items were produced for the Port Line shipping company, formerly known as the Commonwealth and Dominion Line. Each caster is designed with a cylindrical form and a flared base for increased stability on board a vessel. The domed, screw-on tops are perforated and topped with small pointed finials. The shoulder of each body features decorative incised concentric lines. Each caster is engraved with the Port Line house flag above a ribbon containing the letters PORT LINE. The underside of the base is stamped with the maker marks MAPPIN & WEBB, LONDON & SHEFFIELD, and MAPPIN PLATE. Additional marks include a capital letter G within a shield-shaped cartouche and the serial number W29165.
