An early 20th-century French portable spirit burner, or rechaud, manufactured from lathe-turned brass. The circular reservoir is designed with a stepped profile and features embossed lettering to the top reading RECHAUD FEUTRE INEXPLOSIBLE. This mark identifies the item as a safety stove containing a felt-lined reservoir intended to prevent the accidental explosion or leakage of spirits. The burner assembly is positioned offset on the top of the reservoir and is equipped with a removable brass snuffer cap secured by a fine link chain. A secondary threaded cap provides access to the filling port. The item is fitted with a horizontal turned hardwood handle attached by a brass ferrule. The construction suggests use as a standalone portable stove or as a component for a chafing dish or wax melter.
Length: 10 inches.
