A mid-20th-century 10-inch tambourine of Chinese origin, accompanied by its original illustrated cardboard box. The instrument is constructed with a circular wooden frame and a natural skin head, which is secured to the rim by a series of blue-painted metal tacks. The frame is fitted with five pairs of metal jingles, or zils, held in place by metal pins. The box lid features a printed blue label with an illustration of figures in traditional attire playing various musical instruments. The label includes the vertical text TAMBOURINES and the Chinese characters 花 铃 鼓. It is further marked in English MADE IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA and in Chinese characters 中华人民共和国制造.
