An octagonal hand carved hardwood box featuring relief carved animal motifs including a lion, a bird, and a four-legged animal. The decorative scheme includes panels of geometric pierced lattice work and recessed star patterns. The box is constructed from a medium toned hardwood and is fitted with base metal hardware, including a hinged lid secured by a stylised teardrop shaped hasp and staple closure. Small circular drop handles are attached to the lid and sides. The interior is unlined and shows the raw grain of the wood. No makers marks, signatures, or inscriptions are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces.
