A Japanese Banko ware pottery vase of baluster form featuring twin mythical beast handles to the neck. The body is decorated in high relief with a detailed landscape scene depicting a torii gate, traditional thatched buildings, and a gnarled pine tree set against a mountain peak, likely representing Mount Fuji. The decorative elements are rendered in unglazed terracotta tones, providing a contrast to the thick, dripping treacle brown and olive green glaze that covers the neck, handles, and base. The glaze displays a prominent network of crazing throughout. An impressed rectangular seal mark is present on the underside of the base, though it is partially obscured by the glaze.
Height: 17.5 cm.
