A Japanese lacquer jubako or tiered food box set, dating to the Meiji era. The set comprises multiple stacking tiers finished in a dark brown to black lacquer, decorated with gold maki-e depicting the Three Friends of Winter motif, including pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms. The decoration is executed as a continuous scene across the stacked sections. The lot includes a matching lid and a separate tray featuring similar traditional botanical designs. The set is contained within a wooden storage and carrying case of simple construction with a reddish-stained finish. The interior back and bottom panels of the case feature large, hand-painted black ink calligraphy.
